ROUND #1 – Heat #2 – Alana Brennan vs. Nicola Atherton

I’m not sure if this is going to be a fair battle. These two surfers are almost complete opposites. According to theGrind TV profile Nicola is a “Male”, and there’s not a whole bunch of evidence that Alana even surfs. I’m guessing Alana is going to walk away with this heat despite Nicola’s impressive collection of WQS/WCT results.

Alana is my kind of surfer. A surfer that doesn’t necessarily need to compete to at the top of her game. Some people would say she’s exploiting her good looks, which may be true, but that can be equally demanding too. Just imagine if you had a busy schedule flying around the world to exotic locations and being asked to hang out on the beach with your board all day. Not everyone can pull that off.

ROUND #1 – Heat #1 – Laura Enever vs. Megan Abudo

Heat #1 kicks off the Old School vs New School- two Roxy Girls, one working her way up the WQS, and the other struggling to stay on the WCT.

Laura Enever loves lefts, shopping, the internet, bikinis, riding bikes, Lady Gaga, wishes she could surf with Cameron Diaz, and considers showering “good”. I guess this is what you would expect from your typical 18 yr old, but once you get her on a surfboard there is nothing typical about her. Chances are she surfs better than you, and at a young age she’s racked up an impressive resume of sponsors and results to prove it: Triple Crown rookie of the year, Under-18 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, first place 2006/07 Australian Titles, and 3rd in he 6-star Haleiwa Reef Hawaiian Pro. She’s young and she’s just getting started. I’m not sure if I can say the same for her competitor?

Megan Abubo, from the sounds of her Roxy profile, considers herself a role model to young surf girls around the world. What this says to me is she can’t compete with the young ladies on a regular basis anymore, but occasionally willing to teach `em a lesson. Almost a decade on tour Megan has racked some impressive results: 6 WCT wins, 2001 runner-up for the title, and 4th in 2007, but it’s been a few years since she had a win and I’m sure she would enjoy nothing more then spanking a girl more than 10 years her junior. Don’t count this “Blue Crush” stunt double out just yet.
